Choosing the Right Candidate for President
By Aj Tyne
The election is only a week away, and many people still are undecided as to which candidate they will vote for. Most people know it is very, very important to vote, and not let it slip by without doing your part. But to make a really good choice, you have to do some research. Even if you've already decided who you're voting for, but can only give a vague reason why, here are some tips that will help you. Go to legitimate sources, such as an encyclopedia, to learn and understand the basic beliefs of capitalism, socialism, communism, Republican, Democrat. These are important terms that are used a lot in politics and it helps to understand the basic ideas of each. That is not hard and doesn't require a major amount of time. Also learn about the individual issues, such as abortion, energy independence, economics, defense, etc. Decide where your beliefs lie in relation to all that you have learned. Are you a strong believer in capitalism, or more of a socialist, what about foreign policies, education? Chances are you will have a mixture of beliefs, but one will be the strongest for you. What are your own feelings about the different issues: defense, energy, economy, etc.? Go to the website of each candidate. Thoroughly and carefully read all the information in their "issues" section. The rest of the website you can skip. Just read the issues. Anything you don't understand or have questions on, make a note, so you can look it up. Make notes if you need to about what each candidate's policies and plans are. Take some time to think over what you have learned. Then search online for video or transcript of the actual debates. There were three Presidential candidate debates, and there was one debate between the candidates for Vice President. There is a lot of false information on the internet, so be sure you are on a real news site and have gotten the actual, full video or transcript. Listen or read. When you feel confident that you understand the issues and the candidates as well as possible, start to listen to what other people are saying. Go to sites where there is a mix of supporters for both candidates, and where you have the opportunity to ask questions and make comments. One good place to go is mylot.com - it's good because it's not a political site, but people from all over the world discuss everything there, from the trivial to the serious, and there is a politics section. Avoid sites that are very lopsided, one way or the other. You just want to hear what people are thinking, and ask them WHY they think that way. If they can't explain clearly, move on. Throw out any accusations or claims that you cannot get or find proof of - and make sure the proof is REAL. There is a lot of nonsense out there, and there are a lot of websites that look like news channels but are really just one person's ranting. Go to the following link to check on the candidates' voting record in the Senate. You don't have to read everything. But in your research you will have come across claims about their voting record, and here is where you can check it out. In this election, for 2008, the two parties' candidates are both US Senators, but in future elections you may have to check other records. http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=1... Now, you should have lots of information and have had time to do some thinking about what you have learned. Which candidate represents the policies and plans YOU would like to see implemented? Which candidate seems most knowledgeable on the issues, and which plan seems the most possible? Make your decision.
